The team competed at the County Championship games at Millfield School on Thursday 12 April and all thoroughly deserve their gold medals with convincing wins over Haygrove (17-10), The Blue School in Wells (19-8) and Bucklers Mead (22-10). Congratulations.

The Crucible

Well done to the cast and crew of “The Crucible”, who performed to audiences at nightly shows over three evenings during the last week of term. The play, by Arthur Miller, told the story of the Salem witch trials in Massachusetts during the 1600s. Students did themselves proud presenting a powerful play, impressing audiences with their character portrayals and with the large volume of dialogue acted out.

RS trip to London

On Saturday 17 March Year 11 students travelled to London as part of their Religious Studies course to visit the Buddhapadipa Temple in Wimbledon. The visit gave students the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of Buddhism through a tour of the temple and observing how Buddhist monks live, explore Buddhist teachings and ethics and practice meditation. It is an invaluable insight into Buddhism as a living religion in an urban setting and will help students’ understanding go beyond the textbook. Students were brilliant of course – although a bit cold in the snow!

World Down Syndrome Day on 21st March 2018

World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated every year on 21st of March, the date having been specifically chosen as Down Syndrome is caused by having 3 copies of chromosome 21. It is a chance to celebrate and raise much needed positive awareness to dispel some of the negative stereotypes and language used around the condition. Displaying a balanced view is important, so we are pleased to be able to show this clip of one of our own students. Thank you to Pippa and her family for sharing this inspirational video.

Stage-ed Workshop

Year 11 Drama students took part in an all-day workshop on Thursday 8 March run by theatre company Stage-ed. The day focussed on the musical ‘Blood Brothers’ by Willy Russell, which the students have been studying as part of their Drama GCSE. The students spent time working through the play, understanding the historical context of the story, learning about the playwright and acting out scenes under the guidance of west end professional Mike Southern, who appeared in the show in the West End for 10 years.

Inspiring Writing Project

On Tuesday 27 February (and before the snow), 45 of our Year 7 students went back to their primary schools for the day to work with Year 6 students on a story writing project, 'Inspiring Writing'. Students from all year groups in the primary schools within the Tone Valley Partnership worked on a story that day, all with the same starting point of “What if I drank this potion?”. Some Kingsmead students in Years 7 and 8 did the same in their English lessons. The plan is for stories to be shared in English lessons this week.

Year 8 Careers Day

Year 8 students had a change from their timetabled lessons on Thursday 22 February when they took part in a Careers Day. Half the year group spent the day in 30 minute taster sessions which gave an overview on various employment sectors, including the types of jobs available in that sector, what sort of person they would suit and the qualifications required. Industries covered included Construction, Engineering, Agriculture, the Armed Forces and the Arts to name a few.
