PSHCE lessons

Year 7 students had a visit from the British Transport Police for their PSHCE lesson on Tuesday 22 November. The students listened to an informative presentation on Railway Safety from the visiting Officers and learnt about the serious dangers that exist from walking on or near railway lines and the consequences of not following safety signs and instructions. The students watched a video telling the story of how one girl’s decision to take a short cut across a railway line ended in tragedy and were able to put their own questions to the Officers.

Children in Need 2016

Kingsmead held a number of fundraising activities last week in support of the BBC’s Children in Need appeal. Throughout the week students sold Children in Need merchandise at break and lunchtimes and a Cake Sale was held thanks to the efforts of a number of volunteer bakers.

Rugby Successes

Kingsmead’s Year 10 and Year 9 Rugby Teams both had clear wins over their Castle School opponents when they played on 15th November. In fact neither of our teams have lost a game so far this season! Congratulations to our Year 10 team, who having won their Semi-Final game are now through to the County Finals which will take place on 13th December.

Kingsmead’s Year 12 Big Reunion

Year 12 students who left Kingsmead this summer were welcomed back to school for a “Big Reunion” evening on Thursday 10 November. Students were joined by parents, staff and governors to celebrate their individual and collective accomplishments and for the presentation of academic and sporting leadership awards.

Year 8 Hockey Team through to County Finals!

Well done to our Year 8 Girls Hockey Team. Following their game against Castle School on 1st November the team has qualified for the County Finals. We wish them luck - the Finals will take place at Millfield School on Tuesday 13th December.

Thank you Megan!

Megan Wingfield in Year 9 went the extra mile during the October school holiday by setting herself a personal challenge to run 100 miles and raise sponsorship towards new sports equipment for Kingsmead’s PE department.

Royal Navy Cooking Demonstration

On Tuesday 18 October leading chef Steve Thewlis from the Royal Navy visited the school and gave a cooking demonstration to Year 10 and 11 Catering students.

Careers Day

On Wednesday 12th October a variety of careers related activities took place for Kingsmead students. Year 10 spent the morning at the annual ‘One Step Careers Fair’ which takes place at The Venue @J24 in North Petherton. The fair is the largest of its kind in the South West, attracting over 100 exhibitors including colleges, training and apprenticeship providers, the armed forces and universities.

Democracy in Action!

During the first week of October six Year 11 students stood for election as Senior Student and presented their candidate speeches at Phase Assemblies. All students and staff were able to cast a vote for their choice of one boy and one girl to be Kingsmead’s Senior Students for the year.

National Poetry Day 2016

Kingsmead students recognised National Poetry Day on Thursday 6 October in a variety of ways across their curriculum subjects using this year’s theme of ‘Messages’. In Science students studying Food and Nutrition showed their understanding of the topic through poetry messages and Year 7 Food Tech students listened to poetry by Michael Rosen about hot food and washing up. In MFL lessons students recited poetry in Spanish and French.
