Construction

WELCOME TO THE KINGSMEAD SCHOOL Construction DEPARTMENT

The construction industry offers a wide range of exciting opportunities, from tradesperson to leading large scale construction projects. The building sector currently employs over 1.3 million people, in a wide range of jobs.

Students start each term with a Health and Safety induction including PPE and safe workshop practices. All students are expected to bring their own overalls and safety boots for practical lessons. During Year 10 and 11 at least 2 lessons a fortnight is learning about the trade options: plumbing, electrical, tiling and wood.  The remaining lessons are focused on the principles of the built environment.

You will develop skills and knowledge of the professional and trade roles within the construction sector. You will explore different types of buildings and structures, including bridges, railways, and telecommunications. You will gain knowledge of the built environment life cycle, including manufacturing and demolition. Sustainability, structures, and forms are investigated through research and finally knowledge and practical application of Health and Safety.

At Key Stage 4 you will study the Eduqas Level 1 & 2 Vocational (Technical) Award in Construction and the Built Environment. There are 2 Units that make up the qualification:

Unit 1: Introduction to the Built Environment. You will be assessed through a written exam lasting one and a half hours, worth 40% of your final grade.

Unit 3: This is assessed via project work. You will be given a brief from the exam board, where you will plan, prepare, complete, and evaluate three trade-based tasks related to a construction scenario. You will have thirty hours to complete the project, and this is worth 60% of your final grade.

Lunch time sessions in our workshop are available once a week for extra support.
