Religious Studies trip to Bristol

Year 11 Religious Studies students visited the Sakya Thinley Rinchen Ling Buddhist Centre in Bristol during their Easter break. The day trip, organised by the RS department, was a unique opportunity for the students to understand a key part of their studies through observation of worship and discussion with practising Buddhists at the centre. Later that day students had time to walk part of the Banksy tour in the city before heading home.

Apprenticeship Event

On 12th April Kingsmead students attended an Apprenticeship information gathering event supported by training providers from across Somerset. Apprenticeships are a fantastic opportunity to gain industry experience, a qualification and get paid. “Learners left the event feeling more able to make an informed choice about their post-16 options.” Charlie Pierce – Head of Careers

Work Experience in Catering at Oake Manor Golf Club

Kingsmead student Jack Wheeler has embarked on an exciting catering Work Experience scheme with Oake Manor Golf Club. Jack has been supported in learning about food preparation and cooking in the busy Oake kitchens under the support of Jason Ashdown, Executive Chef. We are immensely grateful to the team at Oake Manor for providing Jack with this opportunity.

Sports Relief Update

Kingsmead held a number of events last week to support Sports Relief 2016. Students and teachers played Volleyball and Benchball games on Tuesday lunchtime, cheered on by a crowd of spectators (the fancydress wigs and headgear sported by some teachers didn’t seem to affect their game too much!). Students also made and sold cakes and homemade crafts during the week, as well as selling Sports Relief Wristbands.

EU Debate

On Thursday 17th March Kingsmead hosted a debate and then asked Year 11 students to vote, as the British voting public will on June 23rd; Should Britain Leave the EU or remain a member of the EU. Two visitors were welcomed to the school, Stephen Fitzgerald from UKIP and the Leave Campaign and Mick Lerry from the Labour party and Stay Campaign. Students and staff listened to both sides of the debate and then the students were invited to ask questions; which they did with maturity and consideration.

Rugby Masterclass

Our Year 11 Somerset County Champions Rugby Team enjoyed a training session with former England Rugby Union International Tom May on Friday 11 March. This was a fantastic opportunity for the team; Tom has enjoyed a 19 year career playing for the Newcastle Falcons, Toulon Rugby, Northampton Saints and London Welsh, as well as earning two caps for England.
