Rugby Masterclass

Our Year 11 Somerset County Champions Rugby Team enjoyed a training session with former England Rugby Union International Tom May on Friday 11 March. This was a fantastic opportunity for the team; Tom has enjoyed a 19 year career playing for the Newcastle Falcons, Toulon Rugby, Northampton Saints and London Welsh, as well as earning two caps for England.

Sports Relief 2016 is nearly here…

Kingsmead is getting ready and raring to go for Sports Relief 2016. A number of events are taking place around the school on and before the big day.

Intermediate UK Maths Challenge

During February two Maths groups from years 9 and 10, plus several students from year 11, took part in the annual Intermediate UK Maths Challenge where participants were required to complete an hour long test comprising of 25 questions.

Zambia Exchange Update

Fundraising for the 2015-17 Kingsmead-Kitwe Exchange has been in full swing since the Autumn term when 12 students from Years 9 and 10 were successful in securing a place on the programme following the selection day held. To date the students and their families have been involved in busy cake sales at school, quiz nights, Saturday art clubs and car washing.

STEMworks Challenge on Yr8 Careers Day

On 24 February a team from STEMworks led an exciting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) challenge day at Kingsmead. 90 students from Year 8 were involved in a design and make challenge, working in teams to design a rocket which could be fired some 10-15 metres across the dining hall whilst holding a raw egg!

Well Done Charlotte!

Charlotte Smith, who left Kingsmead last summer, has been selected to play for the England U18 Ladies Football Team (in photo back row, in yellow on right). Charlotte is currently studying a sports diploma at Richard Huish and will be flying off to Portugal in March for warm weather training. We wish her the best of luck in her studies and continuing football career.

Open Stage

Students took to the ‘Open Stage’ at the end of January when they entertained family and friends in a variety style show. Audiences were wowed by the vast array of talents from our students including Enya Kneeshaw (Year 10) rapping the 'Queen's Speech', singing, dancing, gymnastics and an amazing magic trick presented by Elliot Risely (Year 9). A short play ‘Sparkle Shark’ was enacted by students who are part of a drama club organised by Year 10 Chloe King. Students in the Blue Weasel Choir sang “Trail of the Lonesome Pine” and “Good Morning Baltimore” from Hairspray.

Cross Country Championships

Following on from the Area trials which took place on 13 January at Kings College, 20 Kingsmead students from across years 7 to 11 qualified for the Somerset Schools Cross Country Championships. These took place on a dry but windy Saturday on 23 January at Aldon Hill in Yeovil.

Regional Finals for Business Competition

Kingsmead students have been selected to represent the school at the South West Regional Final of the Coca-Cola Real Business Challenge. They will travel to Ashton Gate in Bristol on Thursday 4th February where they will have the unique opportunity of working alongside business experts from Coca-Cola Enterprises on a live project.

Public Speaking Competition

On Wednesday 13th January, seven Year 8 students took part in the Rotary’s ‘Youth Speaks’ Public Speaking Competition held at Richard Huish. The students had to speak for 10 minutes on a topic of their choice, with the main speaker having a whopping 6 minutes of uninterrupted time to explore their chosen subject.
